The EU has already earmarked Cyprus and Denmark for the 2017 award, so the competition is now on between the big four to present the best programme of cultural events and development. In this initial phase, which began in January 2011 and will run until October, the cities will be jostling for a place in the competition. The second phase will conclude in May 2013, when one of the pre-selected cities will be nominated. The winning city will then prepare the ground for a year long programme of cultural events. Frontrunner Nicosia’s bid is already well underway, with a dedicated committee on course to complete the first phase before October. Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou said: "We respect the proposals of other councils and understand that each has something special. But with (Nicosia’s) history, unique architectural monuments, infrastructure, creativity and innovation, we are optimistic." Watch this space.
